THE BLIND LEADING THE BLIND
Men have figured out many things. They have developed various philosophies, religions and roads to whatever kind of heaven they have imagined. They are like blind men in a dark room looking for a black hat that isn't there. God said, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts,” (Isaiah 55:8-9). A man may be quite sure he is right and be dead wrong! Twice God tells us in the Psalms, “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death,” (Psalm 14:12; 16:25). Again God says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9). In spite of men thinking that their ways are the best ways, God says the ideas of man lead to death. Often we hear the advice given to “follow your heart.” When an individual follows his heart he or she is following a deceptive and wicked thing. So wicked and deceitful is the unregenerate man's heart that the individual does not even know the depths of sin and sorrow bound up in it. Not only is man's way of thinking wrong, but his ways are wrong, his heart is wrong and so also is his mind as he is naturally born. “...the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be,” (Romans 8:7). Sinners are not as bad as they could be, but they are as bad off as they could possibly be. They cannot think right. They love the wrong things. Their hearts are wicked and deceitful. And even their mind cannot be subject to the law of God. And yet some individuals teach others their ways. Groups put their thoughts together: thoughts that spring from their depraved hearts, from their inability to think right because of their carnal rebellious minds and expect to arrive at truth. They expect to figure out God and how they can save themselves by doing some religious thing which they think will please God and earn for them heaven. Jesus spoke of such individuals. He spoke about the most religious people of His day, saying, “Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch,” (Matthew 15:13-14). Regardless of educational attainments and intelligence, men and women in their natural state are blind. If they teach others they are blind leaders of the blind. They and their followers shall come to a bad end: in “the ditch.” So it is that men need a divine intervention by the Spirit of God. Jesus said, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God,” (John 3:3).
