FOOLISHNESS AND BLASPHEMY
Is it possible for a person to make Jesus Lord? Can sinners can somehow put Jesus in control of their lives and thus turn Him into their Lord? Is it possible that what sinners do actually changes the position that Christ holds over them? Such an idea is foolishness! Can mere men by a prayer or a decision elevate Him or His Son to a position over them? Does He not already hold supreme rulership over all things including all people? Is God and Messiah so weak that men are able to allow Him or deny Him or somehow keep Him from doing as He pleases? The Bible speaks of God as being sovereign. That means that He is neither controlled nor influenced by anything or anyone outside of Himself. “In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will,” (Ephesians 1:11). Do not miss the phrase “who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will”! This verse means that God does as He pleases and that He does so in accordance with His “purpose.” So then it is foolishness for a mere human being to think or say that he or she has the power or ability to make Jesus their Lord. It is not your will that affects God in any way: not even with regard to your eternal destination according to the Bible. In fact, your will does not enter into the matter. The Bible is clear on this. Speaking of the new birth God says: “Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God,” (John 1:13). And again: “So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy,” (Romans 9:16). You either submit to the will of God or rebel against it. Second, it is a sin of blasphemy for a human to claim to make Jesus Lord. Blasphemy is anything that shows disrespect to God or anything holy. When a human being claims to have made Jesus Christ Lord that person is showing disrespect because he or she is claiming to have done something that God has already done. Peter said, “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ,” (Acts 2:36). God has already “made that same Jesus... both Lord and Christ.” Jesus is Lord! God made Him Lord! You cannot do what God has already done! Who do you think you are, anyway? “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father,” (Philippians 2:10-11). Have you bowed before Him? You will someday but it may be too late!
