GOD IS GREATER
God is revealed to be greater than all things. We prideful humans think of ourselves as important in the scheme of things. Adam was indeed created in the image of God. But he fell and ruined that image and all his descendants inherit his corrupt sinful fallen nature. While God is spoken of as forming children yet in their mother's body, strictly speaking only one human was created in the image of God. That one was Adam. Eve was created in the image of Adam as a suitable helper for him. Adam's descendants were procreated: each bearing the image of its human mother and human father. God says this about humanity and about Himself. “Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing. ...To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One,” (Isaiah 40:15 & 25). If you have ever gone to a well, spring, lake or stream for a bucket of water you know that the water that drips off the outside of the container is unimportant. Nobody worries about “the drop of a bucket.” These unimportant droplets of water illustrate the insignificance of all the nations in comparison to God, His greatness and His worth. In a similar manner God points out that all the nations with their power and wealth are as insignificant as the tiny dust particles on a set of scales. In the use of scales in everyday business no one considers those few tiny dust particles to be of any importance. God is greater than all others and all other things. He is so much greater than all other things that nothing can even be compared with Him. Nothing or no one comes anywhere near to being His equal: not in power, wisdom, justice, holiness nor in any other of His attributes. Neither individuals or nations can be counted as worthy of comparison with God. God made Himself known to Job. Job cried out, “I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes,” (Job 2:5-6). Has God made Himself known to you? Isaiah reacted similarly when God made Himself known to him, saying, “Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts,” (Isaiah 6:5). A proper knowledge of God's greatness will should cause us prideful creatures to fall on our faces before Him in repentance seeing that our only hope is in Christ. With the publican all men ought to cry out, “God be merciful to me a sinner,” (Luke 18:13). Apart from God making Himself known to sinners they continue in their prideful enmity against God.
